The Grumpy Baker in Abercrombie Lane is one of those hidden gems youโre always glad you found. Tucked away in the city but full of warmth and personality, itโs got that perfect mix of quality, character and heart. The staff here are consistently kind, hardworking, and genuine โ they always make you feel welcome, even when the place is busy. You can tell they take pride in what they do. Their savoury baked goods are hearty and satisfying โ the sausage rolls especially are full of flavour and feel like theyโre made with real care. On the sweet side, everything strikes the perfect balance: sweet, simple, and just really nice without being over the top. And the coffee? Spot on. A proper espresso โ smooth, rich, and well made. Whether youโre passing through or working nearby, make the stop. Itโs one of those places that quietly makes your day better.
Average tasting coffee and raspberry danish was average too and stone cold in the evening. A warmer to keep baked goods might help. The cafe is in a small narrow alley making it quite cozy.
Itโs been such a long time since Iโve had a croissant this good! The almond filling didnโt have that weird almond essence taste โ just pure, delicious flavor. The price was quite reasonable too, though I forgot exactly how much it was. It was huge, and since I hadnโt eaten much in the morning, I just grabbed one from a nearby shop. Turned out to be an amazing choice โ so tasty! No wonder it has such a high rating on Google.
Starting with the goodsโฆ the steak pita was yummm. Pita bread was good, steak straight off the grill. The pie was average though. We got a chunky beef and the pastry wasnโt as crispy as we would have liked and the beef was a bit to chunky and dry.
Step into the smallest lane in Sydney, Abercrombie, the Grumpy Baker's a hole in the wall, offering several rich, fragrant breads, and dozens of small pastries. You know me: one large hot chocolate on soy and thick slices of fig and walnut sourdough with raspberry jam for breakfast. The slices are flat grilled and toasty and full of fleshy figs and crunchy nuts. The jam is rich and full of flavour, the hot chocolate silky and chocolate-rich. This is a great place to catch up on a good book, or simply enjoy while stepping out of the city grind. no views, but great service. you'd do well to get your weekly loaf here and snick a little hot drink-the coffee smells superb-while you can.
