Ennui- a bold upscale dining experience in the heart of Sydnry Small, cosy restaurant with a bar and street-facing tables that expresses Surry Hills inner-city vibe perfectly. The food here is rustic with few ingredients, but confident and bring very bold flavour profiles. The oysters were fresh, though on the smaller side. The dill oil was a nice touch, but the mignonette leaned a little too sour and slightly overpowered the oyster itself. The polenta was excellent โ well seasoned, hot, and satisfyingly starchy. The popcorn element paired with the sauce added both creaminess and crunch, making it a thoughtful and well-executed dish. The escargots with sourdough were good, but fairly average and didnโt stand out. The clear star of the night was the duck. Crispy skin with smoked notes- beautifully rendered. The bone sauce tied everything together โ deep, complex, savoury, with a gentle hint of sweetness lingering at the end. We also ordered the MS5 Black Angus rump. The meat was tender, and cooked nicely. A major let-down was service timing: both mains were brought out at the same time, which rushed the experience and caused the food to turn cold. Steak, in particular, i would have preferred to be served on a properly heated plate โ unfortunately, it wasnโt. Overall, the food is on the better side. A nice setting, and with better pacing, it could be a very polished dining experience.
I live in NYC and I always thought that fine dining in Sydney was terrible. This place is absolutely amazing. Especially the duck. We got the grand banquet and it was totally worth the price. Service was great too. If the Michelin guide was in Sydney I think this place would definitely be at least one star (if not more).
Very nice and cute talk vibe bit romantic. The service was pretty good from staff however I found it to be quite slow in between dishes. I liked the starters we got the โ Steak Tatare โ Polenta โ scallops My favourite was the seared scallops. They were quite flavourful and I liked the polenta with the truffle may as well it wasnโt too heavy and it was quite crispy. I liked the fries as a side. They were nicely cooked and crispy the duck was good as well. Quite soft and flavourful. overall, I quite enjoyed all the dishes, however nothing was really super super stand out for me but still overall a nice experience.
What a gem! While different to the other restaurants in this part of town it adds to the area's distinctive place in the City. The staff are warm and knowledgeable with the service just right and never imposing. The beautiful sandstone building adds to the gravitas of the place, while still maintaining an easy-going and comfortable vibe. Then there's the food. We ordered the banquet menu because our group were lazy (Xmas you know) and never regretted it. Delicious. I'll be back to taste the rest of the menu.
Have been back a few times since our first visit to Ennui, and each time has been a delightful surprise. The food and service consistently impress, thereโs a genuine warmth from the team that makes me feel like an old friend returning. The duck dish is an absolute standout and has become a must-order for me every visit. The menu always offers something new and exciting to try, which keeps things fresh and enjoyable. Looking forward to our next dinner reservation in December. I canโt wait to see what surprises are in store!
